What is a vCISO?
A vCISO, or virtual Chief Information Security Officer, is a senior security leader who runs your security program part-time: strategy, risk, policy and reporting to leadership, without the cost of a full-time hire.
Not every organization needs, or can afford, a full-time Chief Information Security Officer. Most still need someone who owns security: who sets priorities, keeps the program moving and can explain the risk to leadership in plain terms.
A vCISO provides that. You get a senior security leader matched to the cadence your business needs, from a few hours a month on retainer to part-time interim cover during a leadership transition. It is always a part-time role. The work covers strategy, risk, policy, incident response planning and reporting, and it stays tied to what the business is trying to do.
Who needs it?
- A business that needs a security program but cannot justify a full-time CISO
- A company whose customers, insurer or board expect someone accountable for security
- An organization between security leaders
- An existing security lead who wants senior coaching
What problems does it address?
- No one accountable for security at the leadership table
- A board or owners asking questions nobody can answer clearly
- Security spending without a plan behind it
- Compliance requirements piling up with no program to meet them
Strategy and leadership
- Security strategy and roadmap
- Board and executive reporting
- Risk register and treatment planning
- Security budget planning and vendor management
- Cybersecurity due diligence for mergers and acquisitions
Running the program
- Building and maturing the security program
- Policies, standards and procedures
- Security awareness program design
- Incident response planning and tabletop exercises
- Compliance program oversight (SOC 2, ISO, HIPAA, PCI)
How it can be arranged
- Fractional CISO, 8 to 40 hours per month on retainer
- Interim cover, part-time, during a leadership transition
- Project based, for a specific initiative
- Advisory, coaching your existing security leader
vCISO or Virtual Security Architect
A vCISO runs the security program. That means strategy, governance, risk, policy and reporting to leadership. A Virtual Security Architect is project and technology focused. It covers design, reviews and vendor choices, and works alongside your IT provider. The two can be combined, and many businesses start with one.
What happens afterward?
The program runs on the cadence you agreed, with regular reporting to leadership. If an assessment would show where to focus first, a Cybersecurity Health Check is a common starting point.
How the engagement works
Free consultation
A 45-minute call with a senior consultant about your situation. It is a conversation, not an assessment. You leave with a recommended next step.
Agree the scope
What we cover, how often and how much time, agreed in writing up front.
Ongoing work
The same senior consultant works with you each time, so you are not re-explaining your environment.
Reporting
Regular reporting written for leadership, and useful to an auditor or insurer who asks how security is handled.
